When the summer afternoon rain comes to the South of France, it is an opportunity to tuck under the faded awning of a nearby café, enjoy a cappuccino or a crisp glass of Chablis. You can contemplate, people watch, or loose yourself within the weathered pages of a classic novel. For me, it was a moment to remember and be thankful to what brought me to Nice, France this week, the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe’s annual coffee tradeshow.
While seemingly smaller than shows previously, what it lacked in size, it certainly made up for in excellent quality of attendees and exhibitors. Hosting the annual Roasters Competition, Latte Art Competition, and Cupping Competition, the floor was noisy with excitement, country pride and more than once, had me wondering if there was a football game nearby. The business of coffee in Europe appears to be healthy, growing, and increasingly sophisticated.
While in the states, we have seen a small decline in “new” roasters entering the market, within Europe, particularly in the Eastern countries, new roasting opportunities are abundant and the enthusiasm is contagious. We shared the show with our European partner, Weber Packaging and as always, our mutual support and friendship, made a business trip feel like time with old friends.
The European coffee market is strong and like many other things, focused on quality and the idea of perfecting the sophisticated palate. And to that, we were busy in the PBi booth, all three days, talking to roasters about the importance of quality packaging, color options, and consistency with a true one-way degassing valve. We unveiled our expanded Biotre biodegradable film line that now spans five sizes in two formats; side gusset bag and stand-up pouch.
The Block Bottom Bag (BBB) format had a lot of interest, especially with the new BBB Biotre due out soon (this summer).
Congratulations to all the competition winners, and especially to Weber Packaging who won an award for it’s Coffee Store Concept, a place where you can purchase a roaster, packaging, and all the accessories needed to begin you new coffee business. Simplifying the process for customers, that is definitely something we at PBi can get behind.
